Am I allowed to park here in Sweden?
It depends entirely on whose land you park on. On a municipal street you get a parking fine (Act 1976:206) — in Stockholm 900 kr (parking without paying), 1,100 kr (wrong place, wrong time, wrong P-disc) or 1,300 kr (stopping where stopping is forbidden). On private land (car parks, shop lots) you instead get a control charge (Act 1984:318) from the landowner's parking company, which may not exceed the municipal level. By default you may stay a maximum of 24 consecutive hours unless signs say otherwise.
📋 The rules
- Municipal street: parking fine (Stockholm 900/1,100/1,300 kr)
- Private land: control charge from a company, max the municipal level
- Default: max 24 consecutive hours unless signed otherwise
- P-disc: set arrival time rounded up to the next half/whole hour
- Date-parking: banned on the even side on even dates, odd side on odd dates
🔓 Exceptions
- A disabled parking permit gives an exemption nationwide
- Loading, unloading and dropping off count as stopping, not parking
- You may transport a sick/disabled person despite a parking ban
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Pay the parking fine to the Transport Agency within 8 days; unpaid brings a reminder (+150 kr) then the Enforcement Authority. You must pay even when disputing (refunded if you win). A control charge is pursued via civil debt collection.
