Am I allowed to light a fire and barbecue in nature in Norway?
There is a general fire ban in and near forest and open land from 15 April to 15 September. In that period it is forbidden to light a fire, barbecue or use a disposable grill near forest — unless it is obvious that no fire can start. That exception is often misread: a prepared fire site, a beach, snow-covered ground or a spot well away from vegetation can be fine, but if you are in doubt, you are not in the "obvious" zone. Breaching the fire ban can bring a fine or up to 3 months prison under the Fire and Explosion Act §42, but that is not where the bill lies. Cause a forest fire and you can face prison and be held fully liable for the firefighting costs and the damage — and a call-out with crews and a helicopter costs far more than any fine. The liability follows whoever lit the fire, also if the wind took it afterwards, and also if you were only grilling sausages. Leave the fire for a moment and it is still yours, whatever happens next.
