Depends on your municipality · soapy water not in the rainwater sewer

🚿 Can I wash my car on the driveway?

With conditions
Quick answer

It depends on your municipality and on where the wash water goes. For a private individual washing their own car at home, no environmental permit is needed in Flanders — it falls under non-classified activities (VLAREM heading 15.4, which only classifies commercial and mobile car washes). But wash water with detergents is polluted wastewater that must not reach the rainwater sewer or ditch; that is only for clean rainwater. That is why many municipalities forbid washing vehicles on the public road via the police regulation, or forbid (soapy) water running into the street gutter or gully. With clean water on your own ground, where it infiltrates, it is usually tolerated; soapy water running to the sewer or ditch can breach both the police regulation and the discharge rules. A professional car wash, which cleans the water via an oil/silt separator, is the safe option. So always check your municipality's regulation.

📋 The rules

  • Flanders: a private individual washing at home needs no permit (non-classified, VLAREM heading 15.4)
  • Soapy wash water may not enter the rainwater sewer or ditch — that is only for clean rainwater
  • Many municipalities forbid washing on the public road or water in the gutter via the police regulation
  • With clean water on your own ground (that infiltrates), washing is usually tolerated
  • Rainwater and wastewater must be separated on your plot; soapy water belongs in the wastewater drain
  • A professional car wash (with an oil/silt separator) is the safe and environmentally friendly option

🔓 Exceptions

  • Clean water without detergents that soaks into your own ground is generally not fined
  • Some municipalities allow washing on your own driveway within set hours or conditions
  • A professional car wash is always fine: there the wash water first passes through an oil and sludge separator

⚠️ Penalties & fines

Break the municipal police regulation — washing on the public road, letting soapy water run into the gutter or the drain — and you risk a GAS fine. The maximum for adults rose to 500 euros with the reform of 8 January 2024, but that higher cap only applies where the municipality actually updated its regulation; elsewhere 350 euros remains the maximum, and 175 euros for minors. If polluted wash water reaches the rainwater sewer or surface water, it does not stop at the police regulation: that can be prosecuted as a heavier environmental offence.

❓ Frequently asked

Can I wash my car on the driveway?

Often yes, with clean water on your own ground, where it soaks in. But many municipalities use the police regulation to ban washing on the public road or letting soapy water run into the gutter — so check your local rules.

Why can soapy water not go into the gutter?

The rainwater sewer and ditches are for clean rainwater only. Soapy wash water is polluted waste water that burdens the treatment plants and surface water, so it does not belong in the rainwater circuit.

Where should the soapy water go instead?

Into the waste water drain. On your plot, rainwater and waste water must be separated: clean rainwater soaks away or goes to the rainwater drain, soapy water belongs with the dirty water.

Do I need a permit to wash my car?

As a private person washing your own car at home, no: in Flanders that is a non-classified activity. Only commercial and mobile car washes fall under the permit requirement (VLAREM category 15.4).

What do I risk if I wash in the street anyway?

A GAS fine of up to 500 euros for adults where the regulation was updated, otherwise up to 350 euros. If soapy water reaches the rainwater sewer or surface water, it can be prosecuted as a heavier environmental offence.
