Can I fly a drone in Czechia?
Yes — but nearly every drone now requires registration. Under EU rules (2019/947) you must register as an operator with the Civil Aviation Authority (ÚCL) and pass the A1/A3 online test once your drone has a camera or weighs 250 g+. Flying happens in the open category: A1 (lightest drones, occasional overflight of individuals), A2 (class C2 closer to people, extra exam) and A3 — min. 150 m from residential, commercial and industrial areas. Before every flight check the geographic zones in the official DroneMap app (airports, Prague centre, protected areas). Fines run to tens of thousands CZK, up to 100,000 for serious violations.
📋 The rules
- Operator registration with the CAA + A1/A3 online test (camera drones / 250 g+)
- Max altitude 120 m above ground, visual line of sight
- A3: min. 150 m from built-up areas; never over crowds
- Check DroneMap zones before flying (airports, city centres, parks)
- Your operator ID must be affixed to the drone
🔓 Exceptions
- Toys under 250 g without a camera: no registration (flight rules still apply)
- Restricted zones (Prague, airports, national parks) only with authorisation
- Complex commercial operations: specific category with CAA approval
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Civil Aviation Act misdemeanours: typically thousands to tens of thousands CZK, up to CZK 100,000 for serious cases (restricted zones, endangering traffic) and criminal liability if aircraft are endangered.

❓ Frequently asked
Must I register a DJI Mini (249 g)?
Yes — it has a camera, so operator registration and the A1/A3 test are mandatory; it may however fly in A1 closer to people.
Can I fly over Prague?
Central Prague is a restricted zone — ordinary drones can't fly there without permission. Check DroneMap.
How high can I go?
Max 120 m above ground, always within visual line of sight.
Can I film my neighbours?
No — targeted filming of people on private property breaches privacy and GDPR.
What about national parks?
Flying is banned or restricted in national parks and many protected areas — again, DroneMap.
