🔧 Can I sell a car without a valid inspection in Czechia?

With conditions
Quick answer

Privately yes; through dealers and listing portals only with paper. A hand-to-hand sale isn't banned and the ownership transfer goes through without a valid STK — since 1 July 2025 even without the registration check, provided the car passed its STK within the last 2 years. Otherwise you need that check, and the car must be towed to it: without a valid STK it may not touch the road, not even for a short hop to the technician. The novelty from January 2026, under the EU end-of-life vehicles regulation: dealers and listing portals demand a valid STK or an expert assessment that the car isn't a wreck — without it the listing form rejects you. And tell the buyer straight: an expired STK is a defect you cannot conceal.

📋 The rules

  • Private sale without valid STK: legal (contract, full disclosure)
  • Transfer: works without STK; registration check waived with an STK within 2 years
  • No valid STK = no road driving — tow or trailer only
  • From Jan 2026: dealers/portals demand a valid STK or a non-wreck assessment
  • List defects (incl. expired STK) explicitly in the contract

🔓 Exceptions

  • Sales for parts / ecological scrapping: no STK, with a disposal certificate
  • Historic vehicles with testation: their own regime
  • Private off-portal sales: continue as before even after January 2026 — a purchase contract listing the defects is enough

⚠️ Penalties & fines

Driving with an expired STK: on-the-spot fines up to CZK 2,000, considerably more in proceedings, and for a technically unfit car police seize the plates — the car then stays where it stands and gets home only by tow truck. The second risk is civil: conceal the expired STK or another defect and you carry hidden-defect liability, with the buyer entitled to withdraw and claim their money plus costs. From January 2026 the portals add their own hurdle — without a valid STK or an assessment the listing never goes live, so you cannot sell where the buyers are.

❓ Frequently asked

Does the transfer work without a valid STK?

Yes, the office will process it and does not examine the technical inspection. Since 1 July 2025 it works even without the registration check, if the car passed its STK within the last 2 years — otherwise you must tow it to the check.

How do I get the car to the buyer?

By tow truck or trailer, and no other way. With an expired STK the car may not use public roads even for a short distance, so even the trip to the inspection station has to happen without driving it, or you risk a fine.

What changed in January 2026?

Dealers and listing portals now require a valid STK or an expert assessment that the car isn't an end-of-life vehicle. Private off-portal sales continue as before — you just need a contract that describes the car's condition honestly.

Must I disclose the expired STK?

Yes — it is a material defect and concealing it triggers hidden-defect liability. The buyer can then withdraw from the contract and demand their money back, so put the expired STK straight into the purchase agreement and have it signed.

Is a fresh STK worth it before selling?

Usually yes: a car with a fresh STK sells faster, for more, and without portal complications, since from 2026 they reject listings without it. The downside is that any repairs needed to pass the inspection come out of your pocket.
