Can I drive a car at 17 in Czechia?
Yes — the L17 scheme has run since 1 January 2024. You take driving school and the exams at 17 and get the category B licence straight away, but until your 18th birthday you may drive only with a mentor recorded in the driver register. The mentor must hold category B for at least 10 years, have zero penalty points and no driving ban in the last 5 years; you may register up to 4 mentors (the first entry free with the licence application, each further one CZK 100). The mentor rides in the front seat, watches traffic and must be sober and fit. Two things get overlooked: driving without a registered mentor counts as unlicensed driving, and L17 works only in Czechia — no driving abroad before 18.
📋 The rules
- Driving school and exams from 17 (with guardian consent)
- Until 18: driving only with a registered mentor
- Mentor: B ≥ 10 years, 0 points, no ban in the last 5 years
- Max 4 mentors; mentor rides front, sober and fit
- From the 18th birthday: full licence, no escort
🔓 Exceptions
- Driving without the mentor before 18: treated as driving without a licence
- L17 applies only in Czechia — no driving abroad before 18
- From the 18th birthday the restriction lapses automatically — no new document and no de-registration of the mentor needed
⚠️ Penalties & fines
A seventeen-year-old driving without a registered mentor is judged as unlicensed driving: an administrative fine, penalty points, and a real risk that the smooth handover to a full licence at 18 falls apart. The sanction doesn't target only the young driver — a mentor sitting beside them under the influence, or otherwise unfit to supervise, collects their own penalty. Points earned at seventeen stay in the register past your birthday, so a clean start is an advantage you can lose in a single drive.

❓ Frequently asked
Who can be my mentor?
Typically a parent or grandparent: they need category B for at least 10 years, zero penalty points and no driving ban in the last 5 years. They are entered into the driver register at the municipal office, not at the driving school.
How many mentors can I have?
Up to four, which covers both parents and a grandparent or two. The first entry filed together with the licence application is free, each later one costs CZK 100 — so register them all at once when you apply.
May I drive abroad at 17?
No — L17 is a Czech scheme and neighbouring states don't recognise accompanied drivers under 18, even with the mentor sitting beside you. Driving across the border is judged there as driving without a licence, under local rules.
What if I drive without the mentor?
That counts as unlicensed driving: an administrative penalty, penalty points and a record in the driver register. It is not only about the fine — you also complicate the clean switch to a full licence right after your birthday.
Does the mentor have to pass anything?
They sit no exam, but must meet the registration conditions: category B for at least 10 years, zero points and no ban. During the drive they must be sober and fit to supervise — they ride in front and watch traffic, they don't drive for you.
