Can I change my GP?
Yes, at any time. You can change your GP (general practitioner) or your paediatrician whenever you want, choosing another among those with available places in your local health authority (ASL) area (each doctor has a maximum number of patients). The procedure is done at the ASL counter or, increasingly, online (on the regional health portal or via the Electronic Health Record), with your health card. The change is generally immediate. If you move to another town, after registering your residence you must register with the new area's ASL and choose a doctor there. Registration with the Health Service and choosing the doctor are free.
📋 The rules
- You can change doctor at any time
- Choice among doctors with available places in your ASL
- Procedure at the counter or online (portal/EHR)
- Needs the health card; the change is generally immediate
- Change of residence: new registration with the area's ASL
🔓 Exceptions
- Doctors who've reached their cap: can't be chosen
- Paediatrician for children (generally up to age 14)
- Patients temporarily away from residence: care with own rules
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Changing doctor carries no sanctions: it's a right. The only practical limit is the availability of places of the chosen doctor, who can't exceed their patient cap. If you move without registering with the new ASL, you might have trouble accessing services in the new area: so it's best, after a change of residence, to immediately sort out registration and the choice of doctor. Choosing and revoking the doctor are free and can be repeated as needed. Keep the registration documentation and any change receipt.
