Can I give my child any name in Finland?
Almost — but the child's interest beats parental creativity. The Names Act allows at most four first names, and a name may not be apt to cause harm to the child. Novel names beyond established practice are possible, but clearly unsuitable ones (slurs, titles, bare trademarks) get refused. The name is reported to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency within three months of birth — disputed cases go via the Names Board.

🔓 Exceptions

An unsuitable name brings no fines — DVV simply refuses it, with the Names Board weighing in. If no name is reported in time, the municipality can ultimately see to the report.
