Can I gig-work while unemployed in Finland?
Yes — work doesn't cut off unemployment security, it adjusts it. Full-time work of up to 2 weeks and any part-time or gig work fit alongside the benefit: you get an adjusted allowance where every gross pay euro reduces the benefit by 50 cents. The former €300 exempt amount ended 1 April 2024 — adjustment now starts from the first euro, allocated by payment date. Report all work to your fund or Kela and keep your job search valid.
📋 The rules
- Part-time work, gigs and full-time work of at most 2 weeks don't end benefit entitlement — the benefit is paid adjusted.
- Adjustment: half of gross pay paid during the adjustment period is deducted from the full benefit (no exempt amount anymore).
- Income is allocated by payment date to the adjustment period (4 weeks or a month) — payday decides, not workday.
- Full-time work over 2 weeks suspends the benefit for the work's duration — entitlement resumes after.
- Report all work and income in your applications — and keep your job search registered as a condition of benefits.
🔓 Exceptions
- Business activity while unemployed is assessed separately (secondary vs. principal) — secondary income adjusts similarly.
- Adjusted benefit plus pay can't exceed the wage your benefit is based on — a cap that bites on well-paid gigs.
⚠️ Penalties
Unreported income leads to recovery and can constitute benefit fraud. Payment-date allocation can delay payouts — but not reporting is always the worse option.

❓ Frequently asked questions
How much does gig pay cut the benefit?
Half of gross pay: a €500 gig reduces the month's benefit by €250. Working still nearly always pays — you keep more than on the benefit alone.
Does the exempt amount still exist?
No — the €300 exempt amount ended 1 April 2024. Adjustment starts from the first euro.
Does a 3-week full-time job end my benefit?
For the work's duration yes — over 2 weeks full-time suspends it, resuming afterwards without a new waiting period.
When does pay affect the benefit?
By payment date: a June gig paid in July adjusts July's benefit.
