Must I register my residence as an EU citizen?
Yes — and these are two different duties that people constantly confuse. First: an EU citizen must, within 10 working days of entering Slovakia, report the start and place of their stay to the foreign police — unless the accommodation provider does it for them, as a hotel or hostel normally will. Second: anyone staying longer than three months must apply for registration of residence, and must do so within 30 days of the expiry of those three months. You have the right to stay beyond three months if you have sufficient resources for yourself and your family — so as not to become a burden on the social assistance system — and health insurance in Slovakia. Registration is free of charge.
