What do I need to fish legally?
Two documents — and most people know about only one. You may fish only if you hold a valid fishing licence and a valid fishing permit at the same time. The fishing licence is issued by the municipality (or the city district in Bratislava and Košice) on an oral or written request. Prices for adults: a week costs €3, a month €5, a year €10 and three years €25. Children under 15 get it free. The fishing permit, however, is a different document — issued by the holder to whom the ministry has allocated the fishing rights for that water. You must carry the documents and produce them on request to the police or a fishing warden.

Breaching an angler's duties brings a fine of €100 to €1,000, together with withdrawal of the fishing licence and of the fishing rights. The commonest mistake is a trivial one: people get a fishing licence from the council and assume that is enough. It is not. Without a fishing permit from the holder of the water, fishing is unlawful — these are two different documents from two different bodies. With poaching it is no longer a matter of a fine at all: criminal consequences follow. So carry both documents and expect the fishing warden to check them at any time.
