How much can I earn tax-free in Hungary?
Surprisingly much — through the right gate, your entire salary can be income-tax-free. Hungary's income-tax system has become a lattice of exemptions by 2026. Under-25s pay no income tax on work income up to 656,785 HUF a month. The big 2026 novelty: from 1 January, mothers of two under 40 owe no income tax on earned income (wages, entrepreneurial draw, assignments) — for life, with the circle widening in steps (2027: under 50, 2028: under 60, 2029: all mothers of two); for an average earner that's roughly 103,000 HUF extra a month. Maternity benefits CSED and GYED in all forms have been fully income-tax-free since 1 July 2025, and mothers of three or four enjoy longstanding exemptions. In casual work (EFO) the daily exempt allowance (2026: 19,305 / 22,308 HUF) is taxed at zero, and directly received cash tips are tax-free. What was never a gate: 'cash in hand, no invoice' — that's not tax-free, that's tax fraud.
📋 The key rules
- Under-25 relief: work income tax-free to 656,785 HUF/month (2026)
- Mothers of two (under 40): income-tax-free from 1/1/2026 — phased widening to 2029
- CSED, GYED (all forms): fully tax-free since 1/7/2025
- Casual work (EFO): daily exempt allowance (19,305 / 22,308 HUF)
- Directly received cash tips: tax-free
🔓 Exceptions
- The reliefs target earned income — rental income, for instance, stays outside
- Wage parts above 656,785 HUF/month and income outside the relief bear normal 15 % income tax
- The EFO daily exempt allowance (19,305 / 22,308 HUF) and directly received cash tips are a separate tax-free band — independent of the wage reliefs
⚠️ Penalties
Wrongly claimed reliefs — typically a false declaration, or the same exemption claimed at several employers at once — trigger tax-office clawbacks with interest and default penalties, usually surfacing at the annual return. You then repay in one lump sum what you spent month by month. Undeclared income, meanwhile, is not tax-free but a shortfall: the authority assesses it, adds a penalty and late-payment interest, and in serious cases fraud consequences follow. What surprises many: social contributions are still deducted even under a full income-tax exemption.

❓ Frequently asked questions
I'm a 38-year-old mother of two. Do I really pay no income tax now?
If you turn 40 after 31 December 2025, then from 1 January 2026 your earned income is income-tax-free — for life. That covers wages, entrepreneurial draws, assignment fees, and even sick pay, CSED and GYED.
Does the under-25 relief need an application?
No — the employer applies it automatically up to the 656,785 HUF monthly cap, with no paperwork from you. With several jobs, declare where it should be applied, or a year-end repayment may follow.
Is GYED really untaxed?
Since 1 July 2025 CSED and every form of GYED (standard, graduate, grandparent, foster) has been fully income-tax-free. Gross has effectively become net — the earlier 15 % deduction is gone entirely.
What about social contributions?
They stay — the reliefs only zero the 15 % income tax, while the 18.5 % social contribution still comes out of wages. Student-cooperative and EFO forms are the exceptions, where it does not apply.
Is my rental income tax-free as well?
No — the reliefs are cut for earned income, and letting property falls outside them. Normal rules apply there, and you cannot leave it out of your tax return by pointing at the exemptions.
