Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Albania: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?
For roaming data billed per unit outside your bundle, in the Western Balkans and elsewhere, operators must apply a default monthly limit of 5,000 lek excluding VAT unless you chose another limit. Data stops at the limit until you agree to continue.
Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Albania is below.
📜 The rules in Albania
The details
- You must get a warning when you reach 80% of the limit and another when you reach it, with the price per extra MB or GB and how to continue. Your consent to go on is valid only for that billing period. (akep.al)
- Operators must also send you a message when you have used 80% and 100% of the data in your bundle, both at home and when roaming. (akep.al)
- Near the border your phone can connect to a foreign network by mistake. Ask your operator how to switch roaming off, or select the Albanian network manually. (akep.al)
Autoriteti i Komunikimeve Elektronike dhe Postare (AKEP)
Albania's regulator for phone, internet and postal services. It supervises providers, reviews their standard contracts and resolves disputes between subscribers and providers; you can file online through e-Ankesa.
