📈 My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Luxembourg?

The short answer

Your provider must notify any change to your contract terms at least one month ahead, on a durable medium. You may then cancel without extra cost within one month, unless the change only benefits you, is purely administrative or required by law.

When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Luxembourg.

📜 The rules in Luxembourg

The details

  • EU guidance gives a rate increase as an example of a contract change that lets you withdraw without penalty if you do not accept the new conditions. (europa.eu)
  • The notice must also tell you about your right to cancel without extra cost if you do not accept the new terms. (data.legilux.public.lu)
  • If a copper-to-fibre migration leads your operator to change your contract, you may cancel without termination fees, even during a fixed commitment period. (myilr.lu)

❓ Questions

Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?

It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Luxembourg on this page.

How much warning must the provider give?

Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Luxembourg set a notice period, it is on this page.

What if I miss the deadline to leave?

The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
