🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Luxembourg?

The short answer

When you switch internet provider in Luxembourg, the new provider runs the switch and activates your service on the agreed date. Your old provider keeps serving you on the same terms until then, and any loss of service may not exceed one working day.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Luxembourg.

📜 The rules in Luxembourg

The details

  • Your contracts with the old provider end automatically once the switch is completed. No provider may switch you or port your number without your express consent. (data.legilux.public.lu)
  • If activation is delayed by more than one working day, or a provider misses an agreed service or installation appointment, the law entitles you to €100 compensation per day. (data.legilux.public.lu)
  • If you leave before the end of your minimum term, outside the cases where the law lets you cancel free of charge, you must pay early-termination fees, which can be very high early in the contract. (myilr.lu)
  • On a prepaid service, your old provider must refund any remaining credit on request. A fee is allowed only if the contract provides for it, and it must reflect real costs. (data.legilux.public.lu)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Luxembourg on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Luxembourg. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
