🐢 My internet is slower than promised: what can I do in Cyprus?

The short answer

For fixed internet, measure your speed with cyNettest, the Commissioner's official tool. If over three consecutive days you get 80% or less of the minimum or normal speed your provider has set, the provider is not complying with the rules.

Your contract states the speeds your provider promises. If the real speed falls clearly and repeatedly below them, you may be able to pay less or end the contract. A measurement with the official tool, where there is one, is the strongest proof.

📜 The rules in Cyprus

What you can do

Complain to your provider first, with your cyNettest results; your contract summary must list the remedies for persistent speed gaps. If the provider does not reply within 15 days or you are not satisfied, complain to the Commissioner.

The details

  • Measure with a computer connected to the router by cable, not Wi-Fi, and make sure no other device or software, such as a TV box, security camera or live streaming, is using the connection. (ocecpr.ee.cy)
  • To back a complaint you need the cyNettest PC application and a registration, so the provider can confirm your contract number and nominal speed. Send results covering three consecutive days. (ocecpr.ee.cy)
  • Your contract must state the minimum, normal and maximum speed for fixed internet. For mobile internet it must give the estimated maximum speed for each network technology and explain the main factors that can lower it. (ocecpr.ee.cy)
  • Your provider must tell you which remedies you are entitled to if non-compliance is proven, and what alternative remedies exist if you are not satisfied with its solution. (ocecpr.ee.cy)

❓ Questions

Does a quick speed test in an app count?

It helps you spot a problem. As proof, a measurement made the way the regulator or your contract describes carries much more weight.

Does this apply to mobile internet too?

Mobile speeds change with place and network load, and the rules for mobile are often different. See the rules for Cyprus on this page.

Is slow Wi‑Fi the provider’s fault?

Not always. Walls, distance and old devices slow Wi‑Fi down. Measure with a cable first.
