Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Cyprus: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?
When you roam outside the EU, EU rules still cap your data spending by default: data roaming stops at no more than €50 a month excluding VAT, unless you agree to continue or have chosen a different limit.
Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Cyprus is below.
📜 The rules in Cyprus
The details
- Outside the EU and EEA (except Ukraine and Moldova), roaming, especially data, can be very expensive. Ask your provider about its roaming charges before you travel. (europa.eu)
- You get a message when data use reaches 80% of your limit, and another when the limit would be exceeded. If you do not confirm that you want to continue, data roaming stops and is no longer charged. (publications.europa.eu)
- If the foreign network does not let your provider monitor your use in real time, the limit cannot apply. You must then get a free SMS on arrival in that country saying so. (publications.europa.eu)
- You can ask your provider to remove or restore the limit at any time, free of charge; the change must be made within one working day. (publications.europa.eu)
- The same data limit and alerts also apply when your phone connects to a satellite or other non-terrestrial network, for example on a ship or plane. (publications.europa.eu)
