What do a passport and an ID card cost?
From 1 January 2026 the fees are higher — and the eID is cheaper than the passport. A passport in 10 working days costs €50, and in two working days €75. An identity card (eID) in 10 working days costs €30, and in two €45. And there are substantial reductions. For children, young people up to 20, pensioners and people with group I or II disability, a passport in 10 working days costs €25 and an identity card €15. The practical upshot: if you do not travel outside the EU, the eID alone is both cheaper and compulsory.

⚠️ Penalties & fines
Speed costs half as much again. The difference between €50 and €75 is simply whether you apply two weeks or two days before travelling — the document itself is identical. Check the expiry date before you buy tickets: many countries outside the EU require a passport valid for a further six months after your return, so "there are still a few months on it" may not be enough. And do not forget the eID: it is the compulsory identity document, while the passport is now optional — issued if you want one, for instance to travel to countries that do not recognise the eID.
