How much in my account is protected from seizure?
Conditional: a monthly amount is protected, but you must declare an account. The unseizable limit is €1,250/month and rises to €1,600 from 1 July 2026 (today €1,250 applies). Protection is not automatic: you must electronically declare one account (one IBAN) as unseizable via myAADE/TAXISnet. Only one account per person; the amount above the ceiling that month is seizable. For wages/pensions (State debts): up to €1,000/month fully unseizable, €1,000–€1,500 up to 50%, above €1,500 the excess is seized. In short: declare an account to protect the limit.
📋 The rules
- Limit €1,250/month (€1,600 from 1.7.2026)
- Protection not automatic — declare via myAADE
- One account (IBAN) per person
- Amount above the limit: seizable
- Wages/pensions: up to €1,000 fully unseizable
🔓 Exceptions
- Joint account: declaration by all co-holders
- Private creditors: a different regime (CCP 982)
- €1,000–€1,500 wage: up to 50% seized; >€1,500 the excess
⚠️ Penalties & fines
There's no "fine" — the stake is whether your money is protected or seized. If you don't declare an account as unseizable, nothing is protected automatically and the account can be fully frozen. Beware timing/myths: the €1,250 applies today and rises to €1,600 from 1.7.2026; "€1,700 / auto-indexed" are proposals, not law; and "protection is automatic" — wrong (a declaration is required). To protect yourself: declare one account as unseizable on myAADE (for a joint account all co-holders declare), and remember only the monthly limit is protected, not the whole balance.

❓ Frequently asked
How much in my account is protected from seizure?
A monthly amount is protected: today €1,250, rising to €1,600 from 1 July 2026. The protection applies only to one account you've declared as unseizable. The amount exceeding the limit within the month can be seized.
Is the protection automatic?
No. You must electronically declare one account, one IBAN, as unseizable via myAADE. Without this declaration, no amount is protected automatically and the account can be fully frozen. Only one unseizable account per person is allowed.
When does the limit change to €1,600?
The new limit of €1,600 a month applies from 1 July 2026. Until then, the unseizable limit stays at €1,250 a month, an amount unchanged since 2015. Proposals for €1,700 or automatic indexation have not become law.
What applies to wages and pensions?
For State debts, wages and pensions are protected in tiers: up to €1,000 a month is fully unseizable, from €1,000 to €1,500 up to 50% is seized, and above €1,500 the excess is seized. For private creditors a different, more favourable regime applies.
What about a joint account?
For a joint account to be protected as unseizable, all co-holders must file a declaration. Otherwise the protection doesn't apply. So if you want to protect a joint account, a coordinated declaration by everyone who holds it is needed.
