How do I switch electricity or gas supplier in Spain?
Your supply does not stop when you switch: the cables, pipes and meter stay the same. Only the company that sends the bill changes.
📜 The rules in Spain
Switching supplier
The new supplier arranges the switch. Electricity: within 10 working days of signing (15 in complex cases), and no switching fee for normal household tariffs (2.0TD). Gas: free and within 3 weeks.
The market
Households can freely choose their electricity and gas supplier. Next to the free market there are regulated options: the PVPC for electricity (up to 10 kW) and the TUR for gas (up to 50,000 kWh a year). New retail rules (Real Decreto 88/2026) apply since February 2026.
Cooling-off period
For contracts signed at a distance (phone, online) or away from business premises you have 14 days to withdraw. If you withdraw from a gas switch, your previous supplier continues supplying you.
