How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Spain?
Your new operator runs the switch, and the old one keeps serving you on the same terms until the new service works. You may be left without service for at most one working day (art. 70 Ley 11/2022).
Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Spain.
📜 The rules in Spain
The details
- If you keep your number, the old contract ends automatically once the switch is complete. If you switch without porting a number, cancel the old contract yourself, directly with the old operator. (boe.es)
- You can end a contract at any time by telling the operator at least two working days ahead, also through the channel you used to sign up. It must process this even if you owe money, and may bill you only up to that date. (usuariosteleco.digital.gob.es)
- No operator may move you to another operator against your will or without your explicit consent, and neither operator may cause delays or abuse during the switch (art. 70.5). (boe.es)
- Delays and abuse in switching, and missed service or installation appointments, give you a right to compensation on terms that a royal decree is to set, including when it is automatic (art. 70.8). (boe.es)
Oficina de Atención al Usuario de Telecomunicaciones
If you cancelled and the old operator keeps billing you, or the new one cannot connect you because the old one has not released the line, you can complain to the Oficina (in the second case, against the new operator).

❓ Questions
Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?
There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Spain on this page.
Can I switch before my contract ends?
Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.
Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?
That depends on the service and the rules in Spain. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
