Can I swim naked?
Nude bathing is only allowed in an officially designated naturist zone — on the coast, that is the Bredene naturist beach, the only recognized one in Flanders. Being naked in public is not in itself an offence; what is punishable is exhibitionism (art. 417/53 of the Criminal Code), which requires a sexual character. Naturism (non-sexual) therefore does not fall under it — nudity is not automatically sexual. Outside a recognized zone you can get a GAS fine for public nudity, under the municipal police regulation. On the coast, Bredene (east of lifeguard post 6) is the only official nude zone; inland there are a few private naturist domains and clubs. In your own garden you may be naked if you take reasonable steps not to be seen by passers-by or neighbours and there is no nuisance or sexual character.

⚠️ Penalties & fines
Naturism outside a recognised zone is in practice dealt with through a municipal administrative fine (up to 500 euros for adults, 175 euros for minors), based on the local police regulations. Indecent exposure is something else and far heavier: forcing your nudity or a sexual act on the sight of others is a criminal offence (art. 417/53), carrying 8 days to 1 year in prison and a fine of 26 to 500 euros. In the presence of a minor or a vulnerable person (art. 417/54) that rises to 6 months–3 years and 100–1,000 euros.
