Can I swim naked?
Nude bathing is only allowed in an officially designated naturist zone — on the coast, that is the Bredene naturist beach, the only recognized one in Flanders. Being naked in public is not in itself an offence; what is punishable is exhibitionism (art. 417/53 of the Criminal Code), which requires a sexual character. Naturism (non-sexual) therefore does not fall under it — nudity is not automatically sexual. Outside a recognized zone you can get a GAS fine for public nudity, under the municipal police regulation. On the coast, Bredene (east of lifeguard post 6) is the only official nude zone; inland there are a few private naturist domains and clubs. In your own garden you may be naked if you take reasonable steps not to be seen by passers-by or neighbours and there is no nuisance or sexual character.
📋 The rules
- Nude bathing only in an officially designated naturist zone (coast: only Bredene)
- Being naked is not in itself an offence; exhibitionism (art. 417/53) requires a sexual character
- Outside a recognized zone: public nudity can bring a GAS fine (municipal regulation)
- In your own garden: allowed if you're not visible to passers-by/neighbours and cause no nuisance
- Inland: a few private naturist domains and clubs where naturism is legal
- From 1 September 2026: exhibitionism moves to art. 184/185 of the new Criminal Code
🔓 Exceptions
- On a genuinely public naturist beach the sexual element is absent, so no exhibitionism
- Bredene: no nudity in the dunes, only on the marked beach during the season
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Naturism outside a recognized zone is in practice handled with a GAS fine (up to €500 for adults, €175 for minors). Exhibitionism — imposing nudity or a sexual act on others' view — is an offence (art. 417/53): 8 days to 1 year and a fine of €26 to €500; in the presence of a minor or vulnerable person (art. 417/54), 6 months to 3 years and €100 to €1,000.
