When can I do noisy renovation in Czechia?
Outside night quiet — and by the rules of your town and your building. National law protects only the 22:00–6:00 night quiet; no statute says drilling must stop at 18:00. In practice two further layers bind you. The municipal decree: in many towns it bans noisy work on Sundays and holidays and lets it run on Saturdays only in windows like 8–12 and 14–18. And in an apartment building, the HOA house rules — typically noisy work only on weekdays 8–18. The stricter rule always wins, not the more convenient one. Decency adds one more: post a notice in advance. Fines: breaching a decree up to CZK 10,000, repeat up to CZK 30,000 — and a night-time excess brings a patrol to your door.
📋 The rules
- Nationally: night quiet 22–6 — no noisy work then
- Municipal decree: Sundays/holidays often fully banned, Saturday windows
- Apartment buildings: house rules (typically Mon–Fri 8–18)
- Long renovations: notifying neighbours/HOA in advance is standard
- Contractor works: government noise limits apply on top
🔓 Exceptions
- Emergencies (burst pipes): essential work allowed even at night
- Detached house in the countryside: only night quiet and hygiene limits apply
- Contractor works: government noise limits apply on top of the decree and the house rules
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Breaching a municipal decree on noisy work: a fine up to CZK 10,000, up to CZK 30,000 on repeat, plus the costs of the administrative proceedings. Noise after 22:00 is dealt with on the spot as disturbing the night quiet. It does not end there: neighbours can sue for nuisance under § 1013 of the Civil Code and the court can order noise beyond what is reasonable to stop. In an apartment building the HOA adds sanctions under the house rules — and you remain liable even when it is a hired firm doing the drilling. You cannot hide behind your contractor.

❓ Frequently asked
May I drill on Sunday?
The statute alone does not forbid it, but many towns do, by decree, and house rules usually exclude Sunday noisy work. Check both, because the stricter rule applies, not the more convenient one.
Until what time on weekdays?
The legal limit is 22:00, when night quiet begins. In apartment buildings, however, house rules usually pull that back to 18:00 — and in the building the stricter rule is the one you follow.
How long may a renovation last?
The law sets no time cap, so even months of work are not unlawful in themselves. But the longer it runs, the higher the risk of a neighbour nuisance claim — phasing the work and communicating helps.
My neighbour drills above me on Sundays. What now?
Warn them first, then call the municipal police for a decree or night-quiet breach and inform the HOA. For long-running excessive noise a nuisance claim under § 1013 of the Civil Code is also available.
Do the rules bind the firm doing my bathroom?
Yes — the municipal decree and the house rules apply to work in your flat regardless of who performs it. You carry the liability towards neighbours and the building; the hired contractor does not shield you.
