Can I keep a gun at home in Finland?
Yes — but storage is tightly regulated. A permit holder stores a gun at home in a locked gun safe, a locked space or otherwise locked — OR with an essential part (such as the bolt) kept separately from the rest. Ammunition is kept locked apart or inside the same approved safe; loose ammunition lying around is a violation. The line runs at five: owners of more than five permitted guns (or an especially dangerous one) must use an approved gun safe or police-approved storage — and the police may come and inspect it. A gun is left in a car only briefly and only in connection with transport, hidden and with the car locked.

🔓 Exceptions

- Storage in a car is allowed only briefly and in connection with transport, gun hidden and car locked — leaving it overnight is not transport.
⚠️ Penalties
A storage violation brings fines as a firearms violation, but the costlier consequence is another one: careless storage is the commonest way to lose your gun permits entirely. The police may inspect the storage space at home for owners of more than five guns, and refusing an inspection endangers the permits by itself. If a carelessly stored gun is stolen and ends up in a crime, the owner can face liability and damages — and insurers require a safe even where the law would settle for a locked space.

Is a locked wardrobe enough for two shotguns?
The legal minimum is met by a locked space or by disassembly with the ammunition apart. A safe is still strongly recommended and expected by insurers — above five guns it becomes mandatory.
Can ammunition live with the guns?
In an approved safe yes. Otherwise ammunition is kept locked separately — cartridges in a drawer are a violation even when the gun itself sits in a cabinet.
Can police inspect my gun safe?
For owners of more than five guns, the police may inspect the storage space with advance notice. Refusing endangers your permits, so it is worth handling the visit properly.
Can I leave a gun in the car during a shop stop?
Only briefly and in connection with transport, out of sight and with the car locked. An overnight stay in the car on a cottage trip is already a storage violation — transport is not storage.
What happens if my storage is sloppy?
The fine for a firearms violation is the smallest worry: permits can be revoked, and careless storage is the commonest way people lose their guns. A gun that ends up in a crime can bring damages.
