Can I bring home a fake designer bag to Finland?
In your suitcase for yourself, yes — for sale, never. Finland doesn't criminalise importing counterfeits for private use: a bazaar fake bag may come home in your luggage. Two exceptions are absolute: pirated recordings (discs, games) may not be imported even privately, and counterfeit medicines are always banned. Commercial import or sale is an IP crime. Mail parcels are another world: customs can stop counterfeit shipments and destroy them at the rights-holder's demand.
📋 The rules
- Importing a counterfeit for personal use isn't banned — a reasonable quantity as travel goods is allowed.
- Absolute exceptions: pirated recordings (music, films, games) and counterfeit medicines — banned even for own use.
- Commercial import, sale and brokering is a crime (industrial-rights offence / trademark infringement) — quantity and circumstances reveal purpose.
- Mail-ordered fakes can stop at customs: rights-holders can demand destruction in the IPR procedure.
- Selling in Finland (flea markets and social media included) is always illegal — 'I bought it legally abroad' doesn't help a sale.
🔓 Exceptions
- One bag or a pair of sneakers for yourself is clearly allowed — ten identical ones attract the commercial reading.
- Intra-EU borders see light checks, but the rules are the same — from third countries (bazaar trips) customs inspects more readily.
⚠️ Penalties
Personal-use imports carry no sanction (recordings/medicines excepted: forfeiture and possible fines). Parcels can be destroyed at your cost. Commercial activity: an industrial-rights offence with fines or up to 2 years plus damages to the rights-holder.
