Can I install a sauna stove myself in Finland?
Half of it — the wiring belongs to an electrician. An electric sauna stove is a fixed installation: connecting it to the mains is licensed electrical work reserved for registered contractors. In practice you order an installer who connects and checks it. In an apartment sauna the swap can also require an alteration notice. Wood stoves add flue and fire-safety requirements and often building control.

- Fixed electrical installations — stove connection included — are licensed work for registered electrical contractors (Tukes register).
- Laypeople may only do de-energised, low-risk tasks (fuses, plugging fixtures into ready sockets) — stove wiring isn't one of them.
- Changing stove power or type affects safety distances and cabling — the installer dimensions and documents it.
- In a housing-company flat sauna the swap can require an alteration notice when it touches company systems or structures.
- Wood-stove installs and flue changes require fire-safety distances, often a chimney inspection, and building-control permits for new installs.
🔓 Exceptions
- Rare plug-in mini stoves are consumer-installable — but the vast majority are fixed.
- Changing stones and maintenance are of course your own.
⚠️ Penalties
A self-wired stove is an insurance risk: payouts can be cut or denied after a fire, and unlicensed electrical work can bring fines. Unnotified alterations in a company can be ordered inspected and fixed at your cost.
