🌐 Is my copper phone line being switched off in Iceland, and what happens to my contract?

The short answer

The copper access network that carried landlines and VDSL is being shut down in phases. Where a connection cannot be moved to fibre, Fjarskiptastofa expects most users to keep acceptable service over the mobile network.

Many countries are replacing old copper phone lines with fibre. Where an official plan exists, it sets how much warning you get and what happens to your contract; the plan for Iceland is below.

The switch-off plan

Phased closure under way; no fixed end date published.

The details

  • In June 2024 Fjarskiptastofa reported that the copper network was expected to stop operating in the coming months. No fixed end date was given. (fjarskiptastofa.is)
  • About 100 homes and workplaces could not rely on good enough mobile coverage after the copper closure. Neyðarlínan ohf., the designated universal service provider, is setting up mobile masts and other solutions for them. (fjarskiptastofa.is)
  • When a provider with significant market power retires an old network, Fjarskiptastofa must ensure a clear timetable, reasonable notice and, where needed, alternatives of at least comparable quality. (island.is)

❓ Questions

Do I have to move to fibre?

When the copper line is switched off, you need another connection to keep your service. Which options you have depends on your address.

Does the switch cost me anything?

That depends on the plan and on the offers you get. Ask for any offer in writing.

Will my landline number still work?

Usually yes: you can normally keep your number on the new connection. Ask your provider.
