📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Iceland, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A contract may not bind a consumer for more than six months. After that you can cancel with one month's notice. The cap does not apply to a contract for installing a connection, especially a connection to a very high capacity network.

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Iceland.

📜 The rules in Iceland

The details

  • If a fixed-term contract renews automatically, the provider must tell you one month before it ends, and also how to cancel and where to find the best tariff information. (island.is)
  • Adding an extra service or device does not change the term of your phone or internet contract unless you expressly agree to it. (island.is)
  • When you lawfully end a contract, the provider can claim compensation only if you choose to keep the terminal equipment. It is capped at the equipment's pro-rata value or the remaining service fee, whichever is lower. (island.is)
  • In a bundle that includes phone or internet, these rules apply to every part. If you may end one part early because it is not delivered as agreed, that right covers the whole bundle. (island.is)

Many contracts run on after the minimum term. Whether the provider must remind you first, and how you can end it then, is in the rules for Iceland on this page.

Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?

A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
