📲 Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Iceland?

The short answer

You can keep your phone number when you change provider. Porting must happen as soon as possible and at the latest one working day after the old provider gets the request. Numbers cannot move between mobile and landline services.

You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.

📜 The rules in Iceland

Compensation

If porting leaves you without service for more than one working day, the provider that caused the delay owes you compensation for each day. The amount is standard, set in the provider's procedures, and you must be told of this right before signing.

The details

  • You may not be charged for porting your number. (island.is)
  • Porting starts only with your written or electronic consent, for example by e-mail, the provider's web portal or an SMS from the number. The new provider tells you beforehand when the change will happen. (island.is)
  • If your prepaid number is registered to you with the provider, you can port it too, but the credit on the card does not have to move with it. (island.is)
  • If a number is moved by mistake or without your consent, the providers must correct it at once, with priority. (island.is)

🪜 Step by step

  1. Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
  2. Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
  3. Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
  4. Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions

How long does a number transfer take?

It is usually quick. If the rules in Iceland set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.

Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?

You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.

Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?

Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
