🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Iceland?

The short answer

To switch, go to the new provider, which activates the service as soon as possible. Until then the old provider serves you on the same terms; any loss of service may last at most one working day, and completing the switch ends your old contract.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Iceland.

📜 The rules in Iceland

The details

  • Switching internet access service between providers should take at most five working days from when your written or electronic contract with the new provider is in place. You can always ask for a later date. (island.is)
  • The old provider may refuse a switch or a number transfer only while you are bound by a contract with a lawful binding period. Unpaid bills are not a valid reason to refuse a private consumer. (island.is)
  • The old provider's contact with you during the switch must not be aimed at stopping it. (island.is)
  • If you move a phone service, the old provider must on request refund unused prepaid credit. A fee for this is allowed only if your contract provides for it and it is reasonable and in line with actual costs. (island.is)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Iceland on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Iceland. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
