Can I vote if I will not be at home?
You can — by one of two different routes. If you will be elsewhere in Slovakia on election day, ask the municipality of your permanent residence for a voting card. With it you may vote at any polling station. The municipality issues it without delay, but no earlier than 45 days before the election. If you will be abroad, there is postal voting — available for elections to the National Council and open to citizens who have no permanent residence in Slovakia, as well as those who have one but are outside the country at the time. The conditions: Slovak citizenship, turning 18 by election day at the latest, and an address abroad to which the voting materials can be sent.
📋 The rules
- Away from home in Slovakia: a voting card
- Requested from your municipality of residence
- Issued no earlier than 45 days before the election
- From abroad: postal voting for the National Council
- Conditions: 18 years and an address abroad
🔓 Exceptions
- Registration for postal voting can be done electronically on the ministry portal
- The registration deadlines are announced separately for each election
- With a voting card you may vote at any polling station
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Both routes turn on deadlines — and those are announced separately for each election. The voting card is issued by the municipality without delay, but no earlier than 45 days before the vote; if you want it sent by post, your request must arrive well in advance, and it can be collected in person up to the last working day before the election. For postal voting from abroad the registration deadline is hard, and missing it means not voting. Register only through the official interior ministry portal — imitation websites appear around every election. Always check the specific dates on the ministry's site for the election you intend to vote in.
