Can I own a firearm in Hungary?

Holding a firearm or ammunition without a permit isn't a misdemeanour but a crime: punishable with years of imprisonment, plus confiscation of the weapon. That covers the inherited rifle too — the gun forgotten in the attic is an unlawful state until you report it. A permit holder's violations (improper storage, irregular transport) bring permit withdrawal alongside misdemeanour or criminal liability: the withdrawn permit stays gone for years and the weapon must be surrendered. Carrying a gas-alarm pistol in public without a carry permit is likewise sanctioned — it stays home.

Can I get a pistol for self-defence?
