Can I own a firearm in Hungary?
Only with a permit — Hungary is a purpose-bound gun country, and ordinary citizens practically never get self-defence firearms. Firearms require a police permit, always tied to a purpose: the two walkable routes are hunting (with the hunting exam and licence) and sport shooting (club membership, qualification) — self-defence permits are an exceptional rarity tied to concretely proven, serious threats. The common entry everywhere: age 18, clean criminal record, medical and psychological fitness, the firearms exam, plus prescribed storage (a security gun cabinet, ammunition separated). The popular middle ground, the gas-alarm pistol: freely purchasable at 18, but carrying it in public needs a carry permit — without one it stays at home. Flobert and higher-energy air guns are also permit-bound. Holding a firearm or ammunition without permits isn't a misdemeanour but a crime — punishable with years of imprisonment.
📋 The key rules
- Firearms: police permit, purpose-bound (hunting, sport, exceptionally self-defence)
- Conditions: 18+, clean record, medical-psychological fitness, exam
- Storage: security gun cabinet, ammunition separated — subject to checks
- Gas-alarm pistols: purchase free at 18+, public carry permit-bound
- Unpermitted firearms/ammunition: a crime
🔓 Exceptions
- Air guns under 7.5 joules: holdable without permits (detailed in a separate question)
- Antique (typically pre-1890 muzzle-loading) weapons: preferential rules
⚠️ Penalties
Unpermitted possession of firearms or ammunition is a crime: punishable with imprisonment and confiscation. Permit holders' violations (storage, transport) bring permit withdrawal plus misdemeanour or criminal liability.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Can I get a pistol for self-defence?
Self-defence permits exist in principle but are exceptional in practice: they require concrete, proven, serious threats — for ordinary citizens the sport-shooting route is the realistic path to handguns.
What does the sport-shooter permit take?
Club membership and documented sport activity, on top of the general conditions (record, fitness, exam) — the weapon type follows the discipline.
Does a gas pistol need a permit?
Not to buy (18+), but public carrying does — without a carry permit the gas-alarm gun stays home, transported in a closed box for justified purposes.
I inherited an old rifle. What now?
Report it to the police — unpermitted holding is a crime; heirs can apply for a permit, have it deactivated, sell to a permit holder or surrender it.
