Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Czechia?
You can keep your number free of charge when you change operator. Ask the new provider and give it your verification code (OKU); it arranges everything else. The number must be active within 1 working day of the agreed date.
You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.
📜 The rules in Czechia
Compensation
Flat-rate compensation: 200 Kč per started day of delay, 400 Kč per day from day 6, and 600 Kč per day if porting is misused. Damages beyond this under the Civil Code remain possible.
The details
- Contracts signed after 1 April 2020 must state the OKU code. Otherwise look in a contract amendment, an SMS, an email or self-care. If your provider won't give it to you, contact ČTÚ through its contact form. (ctu.gov.cz)
- The porting steps take two working days unless agreed otherwise, after the new provider notifies the old one (within 1 working day). The porting day also ends your old contract; the number may be down for at most 1 working day. (ctu.gov.cz)
- The old provider cannot block porting or make it depend on payment. It may still bill the pro-rata part of the billing period in which porting took place, an early-exit charge or other agreed prices. Prepaid users can ask for unused credit back. (ctu.gov.cz)
- If you cancel your contract, you can still port the number for at least 1 month after it ends, unless you expressly gave up this right. Ask for leftover prepaid credit within 30 days of the contract ending. (e-sbirka.gov.cz)
- Late porting gives flat-rate compensation of 200 Kč per started day (400 Kč from day 6); misused porting 600 Kč per day. A missed agreed repair or installation date: 200 Kč per day (400 Kč from day 6). (e-sbirka.gov.cz)

🪜 Step by step
- Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
- Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
- Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
- Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions
How long does a number transfer take?
It is usually quick. If the rules in Czechia set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.
Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?
You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.
Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?
Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
