✈️ Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Czechia: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?

The short answer

Roam like at home does not apply outside the EU and EEA, except in Ukraine and Moldova since 1 January 2026. The UK is not covered either; some operators extend their offers to it voluntarily, but they don't have to.

Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Czechia is below.

📜 The rules in Czechia

The details

  • EU price regulation does not cover roaming in non-EU countries; operators set those prices as a business decision. (ctu.gov.cz)
  • Roaming outside the EU/EEA, especially data, can be very expensive. Check your operator's prices for your destination before you travel. (europa.eu)
  • Your operator must apply a data cut-off outside the zone too, where the visited network allows real-time usage monitoring: by default close to €50 of charges a month (excl. VAT), with a warning at 80%. (berec.europa.eu)
  • On ships and planes, services via satellite networks are not covered by EU caps: you should get an SMS, and mobile services stop at €50 of extra charges unless you decide otherwise. (digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu)
  • Near the borders with countries such as Serbia or Switzerland your phone may connect to a non-EU network. ČTÚ recommends manual network selection and, for a long stay abroad, a local SIM card. (ctu.gov.cz)

❓ Questions

What happens when I reach the spending limit?

Where a limit applies, data stops or you are asked whether you want to continue. You decide whether to go on.

Do ships and planes count as abroad?

Networks on ships and planes often run via satellite, are not covered by the usual roaming rules and can be very expensive.

Can I dispute a huge roaming bill?

Yes. Complain to the operator first, then go to the dispute body if you cannot agree.
