🌍 Do I pay extra to use my phone in other EU countries with a plan from Czechia?

The short answer

With a Czech SIM you pay domestic prices for calls, texts and data in all EU countries and in Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein (roam like at home). The rule has been extended until 30 June 2032.

With a plan from an operator in the EU or EEA, calls, texts and data in other EU and EEA countries are generally charged as at home, within fair-use limits. Other rules apply to plans from other countries; what applies with a plan from Czechia is below.

📜 The rules in Czechia

The details

  • Since 1 January 2026 roam like at home also applies in Ukraine and Moldova. (digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu)
  • Roaming is for trips, not for living abroad. Operators look at the last four months; if you were abroad more and used your phone more there than at home, they may contact you and, if nothing changes within 14 days, charge capped surcharges. (europa.eu)
  • Very cheap or unlimited data plans may come with a smaller EU data allowance when roaming; your operator must tell you the amount in advance. (europa.eu)
  • Northern Cyprus is not part of the zone. Some operators voluntarily add countries such as the UK, Switzerland or Andorra to their EU zone, but that is a business decision; check the terms with your operator. (ctu.gov.cz)
  • Calling a foreign number from Czechia is not roaming but an international call: within the EU its price is capped, but domestic prices do not apply. (ctu.gov.cz)

❓ Questions

What does fair use mean?

Operators may limit roaming at home prices to normal travel, not living abroad for good, and may cap data abroad on very large plans.

Which countries count as home?

That depends on your plan and on where your operator is based. The rules for Czechia are on this page.

Are calls back home free?

Calls home usually cost the same as at home when roaming at home prices applies. Calls to other countries can cost extra.
