Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Czechia?
EU open-internet rules give you the right to use terminal equipment of your choice. ČTÚ fined a provider that allowed its service only with its own modem: unless there is an objective technical reason, you decide which modem or router to use.
Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Czechia.
📜 The rules in Czechia
The details
- Network operators must let you connect equipment that meets the technical requirements to a suitable interface, and must publish the types of interface and their specifications (§ 73). (e-sbirka.gov.cz)
- If you leave early and keep a subsidised device restricted to the provider's network, the restriction must be removed free of charge, at the latest when you pay for the device. (e-sbirka.gov.cz)
- ČTÚ supervises compliance with the EU open-internet rules in Czechia and publishes a report on it every year. (ctu.gov.cz)

❓ Questions
Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?
Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.
Do I still pay for the provider’s router?
Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.
Will my own router make my internet faster?
It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
