Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Poland: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?
Outside the EU/EEA, roaming is charged under your provider's price list. Data spending protection still applies where the foreign network allows usage monitoring: a default limit of €50 a month for data roaming, with an alert at 80%.
Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Poland is below.
📜 The rules in Poland
The details
- Once €50 is exceeded, you get an SMS on how to continue and the cost of each extra unit. If you do not reply, data is blocked until you ask to continue. After that, a second limit of €100 applies with the same alerts. (cik.uke.gov.pl)
- You get an SMS with prices each time you enter another country, outside the EU too. (cik.uke.gov.pl)
- Going outside the EU or abroad for longer? A local SIM or eSIM with a data package is often cheaper than roaming. Download maps to your phone before you go. (cik.uke.gov.pl)
- On cruises, check which network your phone is using: a ship's satellite network is not covered by EU roaming rules. Switch off data or use airplane mode, and use on-board Wi-Fi if available. (cik.uke.gov.pl)
