Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Austria?
You may use a router of your choice (terminal equipment freedom, Art. 3(1) Regulation (EU) 2015/2120). If your provider supplies a router with a built-in modem, it must be possible to switch it to bridge mode so you can connect your own router behind it.
Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Austria.

The details
- Every internet provider must give you the information you need to set up bridge mode; RTR links to the instructions of the largest providers. (rtr.at)
- RTR could fix the network termination point by regulation (§ 49 TKG 2021). After evaluating router freedom in 2023 it saw no current need, but keeps monitoring. (rtr.at)

❓ Questions
Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?
Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.
Do I still pay for the provider’s router?
Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.
Will my own router make my internet faster?
It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
