📦 I am moving house: what happens to my internet contract in Austria?

The short answer

When you move, your internet contract moves with you unchanged, same term and conditions, if the provider offers the service at your new address. For the move it may charge at most its activation fee for a new connection (§ 135(11) TKG 2021).

When you move, your provider may be able to take the service with you. If it cannot offer the same service at the new address, you may be able to end the contract. The rules for Austria are below.

📜 The rules in Austria

The details

  • If the provider cannot deliver the agreed service at your new home, you may cancel with two months' notice to the end of a calendar month. (rtr.at)
  • These rights apply only to contracts concluded after 1 November 2021 that include internet and are linked to your current home, usually the contract address. (rtr.at)
  • If you received a device such as a smartphone or modem, you must return it; if you keep it, the provider may charge an early-termination payment, but only if the contract provides for one. (rtr.at)
  • A landline number can only be kept within the same area code: moving within Vienna is fine, moving from Vienna to Lower Austria is not. (rtr.at)
