✈️ Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Liechtenstein: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?

The short answer

Outside the EU and EEA, e.g. in Switzerland, EU rules give you no home prices. Your provider must still send free price information on arrival and apply a data spending limit, by default at most EUR 50 a month excluding VAT (Reg. (EU) 2022/612 Art. 13, 14).

Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Liechtenstein is below.

📜 The rules in Liechtenstein

The details

  • Roaming at home prices covers the EU and the EEA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway; neighbouring Switzerland is not covered. Check your provider's prices before you travel. (europa.eu)
  • You get an alert at 80% of the limit. If you do not confirm that you want to continue when the limit is reached, data roaming stops and is no longer charged (Regulation (EU) 2022/612 Art. 14). (publications.europa.eu)
  • If the foreign network does not allow real-time usage tracking, the limit cannot be guaranteed; you must then be told so by free SMS when you enter that country (Regulation (EU) 2022/612 Art. 14). (publications.europa.eu)

❓ Questions

What happens when I reach the spending limit?

Where a limit applies, data stops or you are asked whether you want to continue. You decide whether to go on.

Do ships and planes count as abroad?

Networks on ships and planes often run via satellite, are not covered by the usual roaming rules and can be very expensive.

Can I dispute a huge roaming bill?

Yes. Complain to the operator first, then go to the dispute body if you cannot agree.
