🌍 Do I pay extra to use my phone in other EU countries with a plan from Liechtenstein?

The short answer

Liechtenstein applies the EU Roaming Regulation through the EEA (KomG Art. 1). In other EU and EEA countries you pay no surcharge on your domestic price for calls, texts and data, within your provider's fair use policy (Regulation (EU) 2022/612 Art. 4 and 5).

With a plan from an operator in the EU or EEA, calls, texts and data in other EU and EEA countries are generally charged as at home, within fair-use limits. Other rules apply to plans from other countries; what applies with a plan from Liechtenstein is below.

📜 The rules in Liechtenstein

The details

  • The rule covers the EU and the EEA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Neighbouring Switzerland is not covered. (europa.eu)
  • Roaming may not be offered on worse terms than at home, in particular in quality of service, where the same network generation is available on the visited network (Regulation (EU) 2022/612 Art. 4). (publications.europa.eu)
  • Providers must take reasonable steps so you do not pay roaming charges for connecting to a foreign network by accident while at home, and tell you how to avoid this in border regions (Regulation (EU) 2022/612 Art. 13 and 14). (publications.europa.eu)
  • When you enter another country, you get a free automatic message that you can call 112 free of charge, with a link to other ways of reaching emergency services there (Regulation (EU) 2022/612 Art. 15). (publications.europa.eu)

❓ Questions

What does fair use mean?

Operators may limit roaming at home prices to normal travel, not living abroad for good, and may cap data abroad on very large plans.

Which countries count as home?

That depends on your plan and on where your operator is based. The rules for Liechtenstein are on this page.

Are calls back home free?

Calls home usually cost the same as at home when roaming at home prices applies. Calls to other countries can cost extra.
