How long can a phone or internet contract last in Malta, and how do I end it?
A phone or internet contract may not bind you for longer than 24 months. If the contract lets the provider raise prices in line with an official consumer price index, the commitment period may not exceed six months.
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Malta.
📜 The rules in Malta
The details
- After a fixed-term contract is automatically extended, you can end it at any time with 30 days' notice and no costs, apart from charges for the service during the notice period and for unreturned loaned equipment. (legislation.mt)
- Before an automatic extension, the provider must tell you prominently and on a durable medium when your commitment ends and how to cancel, and give you best-tariff advice. (legislation.mt)
- If you end the contract before the initial period is over, any notice period the provider asks for may not exceed one month. (legislation.mt)
- Early-termination fees must be justified and reasonable and may not exceed the periodic fees left until the end of the initial term. None can be charged after an automatic extension. (mca.org.mt)
Malta Communications Authority (MCA)
Takes your complaint about a phone, internet or TV provider once you have complained to the provider first. It intervenes where a rule it enforces was broken; otherwise it mediates or refers you to the right forum.
