🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Malta?

The short answer

When you switch internet provider, the new provider leads the switch and activates your service on the date agreed with you. Until then the old provider keeps serving you on the same terms, and you may not lose internet for more than one working day.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Malta.

📜 The rules in Malta

The details

  • If you port your number, your contract with the old provider ends automatically once porting succeeds. Do not cancel your old service yourself before requesting porting: the new provider arranges this as part of the process. (mca.org.mt)
  • Providers may not switch you or port your number without your explicit consent, and may not delay or abuse the switching and porting process. (legislation.mt)
  • Switching does not cancel early-termination fees: if you are still within a minimum contract period, these may apply. Check before you ask to switch. (mca.org.mt)
  • While your porting request is in progress, the old provider may not contact you to talk you into staying, nor make you offers that are not available to all its subscribers. (mca.org.mt)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Malta on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Malta. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
