✈️ Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Malta: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?

The short answer

Outside the EU/EEA zone, other than Moldova and Ukraine, Roam Like At Home does not apply and roaming can cost much more. Your provider must still send you its roaming prices when you arrive, and a default limit protects you from high data bills.

Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Malta is below.

📜 The rules in Malta

The details

  • By default, data roaming has a limit of up to €50 a month excluding taxes. You are alerted at 80% and at the limit, then data stops unless you choose to continue. Removing or changing the limit is free and done within one working day. (mca.org.mt)
  • If the network you visit outside the zone does not let your provider track your use in real time, the limit may not work; the welcome message must then tell you so. (mca.org.mt)
  • On ships and planes the EU roaming rules usually do not apply, and higher charges typically apply. (mca.org.mt)
  • Before you travel, ask your provider about its rates and roaming packages. For a longer stay, a local SIM bought on arrival may be cheaper. (mca.org.mt)

Yes. Complain to the operator first, then go to the dispute body if you cannot agree.
