📡 Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Malta?

The short answer

EU open-internet rules give you the right to use terminal equipment of your choice through your internet access service. Providers may not add restrictions on its use beyond those set by EU law, and a contract may not limit that right.

Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Malta.

📜 The rules in Malta

The details

  • A separate instalment contract for building a physical connection, such as fibre, may not include terminal equipment such as a router or modem. (legislation.mt)
  • If you end the contract and keep subsidised equipment bundled with it, you pay at most its pro-rata value or the remaining fees, whichever is less, and the provider must unlock it for other networks free of charge. (legislation.mt)
  • When you end a contract, hand back any equipment the provider supplied. Before signing, check whether it is leased and whether any deposit is refunded when you return it. (mca.org.mt)

❓ Questions

Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?

Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.

Do I still pay for the provider’s router?

Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.

Will my own router make my internet faster?

It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
