✈️ Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Belgium: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?

The short answer

Outside the EU, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, roaming is not regulated: operators set their own prices. Switzerland, Great Britain, Turkey and Andorra are outside the home-tariff zone too. Check your operator's rates before you travel.

Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Belgium is below.

📜 The rules in Belgium

The details

  • Mobile data abroad, also outside Europe in principle: your operator must cut off data once the roaming data bill reaches €50 excluding VAT (€60.50 including VAT), unless you agree another limit. You get a warning at 80%. (bipt.be)
  • If the foreign network does not let your operator follow your usage in real time, it must send you a free text at once saying it cannot guarantee the limit. (bipt.be)
  • On ships and planes in the EU you roam at your home tariff only while connected to a land-based network. Satellite mobile services on board are not regulated, so the rates can run very high. (bipt.be)

❓ Questions

What happens when I reach the spending limit?

Where a limit applies, data stops or you are asked whether you want to continue. You decide whether to go on.

Do ships and planes count as abroad?

Networks on ships and planes often run via satellite, are not covered by the usual roaming rules and can be very expensive.

Can I dispute a huge roaming bill?

Yes. Complain to the operator first, then go to the dispute body if you cannot agree.
