🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Belgium?

The short answer

For fixed internet or TV, Easy Switch applies by default: your new operator arranges the switch and cancels your old contract once its service works. Give it your customer number and the Easy Switch ID from your bill, and say which numbers to keep.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Belgium.

📜 The rules in Belgium

The details

  • The old operator must stop billing you by the end of the day after it learns of your switch. If your service is down for more than one working day during the switch, the new operator automatically pays €10 per calendar day. (bipt.be)
  • You agree a fixed activation date. If the operator misses it without agreeing a new date, ask it for €6 per day of delay. If a technician misses a half-day appointment, you get €30 automatically. (bipt.be)
  • Easy Switch does not apply if you move and stay with the same operator, or switch only TV or only internet. Then you cancel the old service yourself. Return your old modem or decoder yourself too. (bipt.be)
  • At least once a year your operator must tell you which of its tariff plans is cheapest for your usage. Ask yourself and it must answer within two weeks. Bestetarief.be compares all plans, checked by the BIPT. (bipt.be)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Belgium on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Belgium. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
