Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Belgium?
You can port your number immediately or on a date you agree with your new operator. A date helps if a contract term or device payment is still running. After the technical check, the transfer takes at most one working day.
You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.
📜 The rules in Belgium
Compensation
€3 per day of delay (sometimes €5); claim it from your new operator within 6 months.
The details
- You can always keep your mobile number; a fixed number stays yours if you remain in the same telephone zone. You sign or confirm a request with the new operator, which ends your old subscription and takes over the number. (bipt.be)
- Transfer late? You are owed €3 per day of delay, sometimes €5. It is not automatic: claim it from your new operator within 6 months, even if the old operator caused the delay. Prepaid users may get call credit. (bipt.be)
- Prepaid card? In the month after porting, ask your old operator to refund unused credit from your last top-up, without any bonus. It may charge €5 in administrative costs. (bipt.be)
- After you cancel a contract, you keep the right to port its number to another operator for at least one month, unless you give up that right. Porting a number without your written consent is forbidden. (ejustice.just.fgov.be)
Ombudsdienst voor telecommunicatie
Free mediation when your operator gave you no solution or no satisfying answer. Written complaints only; you can phone for advice.
🪜 Step by step
- Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
- Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
- Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
- Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions
How long does a number transfer take?
It is usually quick. If the rules in Belgium set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.
Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?
You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.
Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?
Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
