📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Belgium, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A consumer telecom contract may run at most 24 months at the start. You can cancel in writing at any time, without giving a reason. After an automatic renewal the contract ends when you choose, even immediately.

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Belgium.

📜 The rules in Belgium

The details

  • No cancellation fee for an open-ended contract, or for a fixed-term contract after six months. Cancel within the first six months and the operator may charge at most the subscription fees up to the end of month six. (bipt.be)
  • Got a phone or tablet free or at a discount? The operator may also charge its remaining value from the repayment table in your contract, even after six months. After 24 months nothing is due for the device. (bipt.be)
  • At least one month before a fixed-term contract renews automatically, the operator must tell you on a durable medium, in bold, when your commitment ends, how to cancel, and which of its tariffs is cheapest for you. (ejustice.just.fgov.be)
