📝 What must I get before I sign a phone or internet contract in Luxembourg, and can I change my mind?

The short answer

Before you sign, your provider must give you a free contract summary on the EU template: provider details, main features, charges, contract length, renewal and cancellation terms and, for internet, speeds and remedies. It becomes part of your contract.

Before you sign, you should get the key terms in writing: price, term, speed and how to leave. In many countries a short contract summary is required, and contracts made online, by phone or at your door usually come with a cooling-off period. The rules for Luxembourg are below.

The details

  • If the provider breaks its contract-summary obligations, the contract is void, and only you, the consumer, can invoke that nullity. (data.legilux.public.lu)
  • If the summary could not be given before signing, the contract takes effect only once you confirm your agreement in writing after receiving it. (data.legilux.public.lu)
  • For a contract made at a distance or off-premises, you can withdraw within 14 calendar days of signing, without giving a reason or paying a penalty; you pay only for any service already provided. (guichet.public.lu)
  • For a contract concluded by phone, the provider must confirm the offer on a durable medium; you are bound only once you have signed it or accepted it in writing. (myilr.lu)

❓ Questions

Does the cooling-off period apply to a contract signed in a shop?

Usually not: it normally covers contracts made online, by phone or away from the shop.

Do I pay for days I already used?

If you asked for the service to start during the cooling-off period, you may have to pay for the days you used.

What if I never got a contract summary?

Tell the provider in writing and ask the regulator what this means for your contract in Luxembourg.
